The leaning tower of Pisa – 20 km

Torre di Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa or simply the Tower of Pisa (Torre di Pisa) is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the Cathedral of of Santa Maria Assunta , known worldwide for its unintended tilt to one side.

The height of the tower is about 56 meters and it was built between the 12th and 14th centuries.

Its weight is estimated at 14,500 metric tons and the tilt began during construction, caused by an inadequate foundation on ground, too soft on one side to properly support the structure’s weight. Prior to restoration work performed between 1990 and 2001, the inclination of the building currently measures 3.97 ° from the vertical axis.

The structure of the tower incorporates two rooms. One at the base of the tower, known as the Hall of the fish, because of a bas-relief depicting a fish; this room is without roof, being in fact the hollow center of the tower. The other room is the belfry, on the seventh ring. Bounded by the walls of the upper walkway, it’s also without roof and in the center, through an opening, you can see the ground floor of the tower.

The leaning tower of Pisa has been proposed as one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
